Poorly Decommissioned Back Boiler

These photos are an unfortunate example of what can happen when new boilers are improperly installed, and old systems aren't correctly decommissioned.

Improperly drained, fluid in the old back boiler was being heated by the new fire placed in front.  Pressure gradually built up over time and, eventually, lead to an explosion.

A lot of older properties were built with back boilers, often installed behind a fireplace in the living room.  More and more people are looking for cost savings, instant hot water or cheaper maintenance these days and are switching to combi boilers.

Some engineers will recommend decommissioning them, rather than a complete removal, depending on circumstances.  However, there is a process to follow, especially if you plan to place a new gas fire in front of it.

You should always use a professional registered Gas Safe engineer for decommissions and installs.  And, it is just as important to ensure you service your boiler on a yearly basis to catch any issues early, and to maintain your warranty terms & conditions.
